We believe ...
- The school should be a partnership of teachers and staff, students, parents, and community members.
- A school should create a student-centered learning environment where instructional decisions are driven by the needs of the learner.
- Every student can learn; each student has the responsibility to take advantage of a variety of opportunities to help him/her reach individual educational potential.
- The school has the responsibility to meet the unique needs of each student; in turn, each student has the responsibility to contribute positively and productively to the school's community and culture.
- Clear goals and high expectations, based on national and state standards, should provide the basis for development of curriculum and design of instruction.
- A school should have an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
- Students should have a variety of educational opportunities to demonstrate their achievement.
- Students should be involved in experiences in which they are able to apply their learning to authentic contexts.
- Schools should guide students to become self-directed lifelong learners.
- A school should maintain an environment in which all individuals feel safe.
- A school should have professional faculty and staff members who share in the responsibility of providing a supportive learning environment and functioning as a positive role model.
- The faculty of a school should be given opportunities for professional growth and development to enhance flexibility and implementation of different methodologies.
Vision
We envision a school where the curriculum will be relevant, challenging and interesting and will adapt to meet the changing needs of the students; instruction will be enhanced with technology and opportunities for interdisciplinary learning; varied methods of instruction will be used with emphasis on student involvement; instruction will be accurate, well-planned, and effective; fair and accurate assessments will encompass both content and skills, emphasizing critical thinking; students, educators, and community members will feel pride and ownership in the school; the school will be safe, clean, comfortable, and conducive to learning; the school's environment will showcase student accomplishments; and Fort Dorchester High School will continue to set the standard for all other schools in the Southeast.
